What 2020 Taught Lake Charles About Building
Barndominium builders in Lake Charles cannot talk about construction without talking about 2020. On August 27 of that year, Hurricane Laura made landfall near Cameron with sustained winds of 150 mph, a high-end Category 4 and the first Category 4 landfall on record in southwestern Louisiana. About six weeks later, on October 9, Hurricane Delta came ashore near Creole, just 12 miles east of where Laura had landed. Lake Charles, the seat and largest city of Calcasieu Parish, took the brunt of both.
The record, briefly
- August 25, 2020: A mandatory evacuation was ordered for all of Calcasieu Parish, about 200,000 people.
- August 27: Laura's gusts reached 128 mph at Lake Charles Regional Airport and 137 mph elsewhere in the city. Damage to residential and commercial roofs reached catastrophic levels, half of the city's mature trees were blown down, stripped or broken, and many mobile homes were knocked off their mounts.
- Downtown: Many windows were blown out of the Capital One Tower, which was finally imploded on September 7, 2024.
- After the storm: Twelve people in Calcasieu Parish died of carbon monoxide poisoning from generators run indoors.
- October 9: Delta's gusts reached 95 mph at the airport. Many areas already damaged were hit again, tarps from Laura were blown away, and some homes in Moss Bluff flooded.
Lesson one: the roof is the house
When the roof goes, everything under it follows. A barndominium has a structural advantage here because the frame, purlins and roof panels can be engineered as one load path, from panel fastener to foundation anchor. Louisiana's adoption of the 2021 International Residential Code, effective January 1, 2023, reinforced this with new roof nailing patterns meant to reduce losses in high winds and a requirement for secondary barriers against leaks. On a Lake Charles barndo we treat the fastening schedule, the clip and girt connections and the anchor bolt layout as primary design items, not details left to the field.
Lesson two: trees and debris
With half of the city's mature trees down or damaged after Laura, the trees on your own lot are part of the site plan. We look at what stands within striking distance of the building and talk honestly about which ones to keep. Large openings matter too: wide shop doors are the biggest weak point in a wind event, so we specify doors rated for the design wind load and plan how they will be braced or protected.
Lesson three: power and generators
The carbon monoxide deaths after Laura are a hard reminder. A permanent standby generator is worth considering on any Lake Charles build. We plan its pad outdoors, away from doors, windows and air intakes, with the transfer switch and fuel supply designed in from the start rather than added in a hurry after the next storm.
Lesson four: water still matters
Delta flooded homes in Moss Bluff, and the parish is laced with water: the Calcasieu River, Calcasieu Lake, the Intracoastal Canal, Bayou d'Inde, English Bayou and Ouiski Chitto Creek all run through it. We check the flood zone for every parcel and set floor heights and pad grades accordingly.
Where people are building
The city counted 84,872 residents in 2020, and the Census Bureau estimates 82,676 for July 2025. The wider parish grew from 192,768 in 2010 to 216,785 in 2020. Much of the land suited to a barndominium with a shop lies in the unincorporated parish, in areas like Moss Bluff, Carlyss, Starks or toward Iowa and Vinton. Inside city limits, the city of Lake Charles handles zoning and permits; outside them, Calcasieu Parish generally does. We confirm jurisdiction for your parcel first. Rural lots without sewer also need an onsite sewage permit, which in Louisiana runs through sanitarians at the parish health unit.
Lake Charles is also home to McNeese State University, and the name itself honors Charles Sallier, one of the area's first European settlers. The town was incorporated as Charleston on March 7, 1861, and reincorporated as the City of Lake Charles on March 16, 1867. It has been rebuilding after storms for a long time, and the next generation of homes is being built with that history in mind.

Lake Charles Questions
Can a steel barndominium stand up to a storm like Laura?
It has to be designed for it. We engineer the roof, frame and anchors as one load path and specify doors rated for the design wind load.
Where should a standby generator go?
Outdoors on its own pad, away from doors, windows and air intakes. We plan the location and transfer switch during design.
Does Calcasieu Parish or the city permit my barndo?
Inside Lake Charles city limits it is the city; in unincorporated areas like Moss Bluff or Carlyss it is generally the parish. We verify for your parcel.
Do I need to worry about flooding as well as wind?
Yes. Delta flooded homes in Moss Bluff. We check the flood zone and set floor height for each lot.
